The year’s half over and some amazing games have been released. While I don’t have time to look at all of them, today I will count down the top six games released in 2017 (so far). I will be judging these titles based off their critic scores and overall impression among the gaming community. As usual I will stick to one game per developer and there may be spoilers. Additionally, I will not be listing any re-releases or remasters, as these titles didn’t originally release in 2017. With that out of the way let’s begin.
6. PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS (PC)
Battle royal games are nothing new, but this addition is quickly becoming the most popular in the genre. While this game is technically still in alpha, it is playable immediately for anyone on steam. It features a fairly balanced gun library, unique customization, and a detailed map that provides various obstacles to survivors. Admittedly incomplete, this game has a myriad of upcoming features, like community mod support, that makes it stand out from the rest. The game’s audience only continues to grow, with much of my friends from work now playing it as well.
5. Resident Evil (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
Considered as a reboot by many, this title has successfully revitalized the franchise. Taking a new first person perspective, the game has proven to be much scarier and immersive than its predecessors. Featured on all major systems (except the Nintendo Switch), this game even features PSVR support for those who want a truly unique experience. Fans responded favorably to the changes, with critics finding little to fault. Resident Evil 7 shows Capcom has learned from their mistakes, a trend that I hope continues with future installments.
4. NieR: Automata (PS4, PC)
This game is as creative as it is bizarre. Playing as several androids built by humans, you fight against alien technology inhabiting the earth. While the game is classified as an RPG, it has elements of an FPS, hack-and-slash, and other genres. Besides from a beautiful open world, this game features a detailed customization system. The system allows you to not only augment your weapons, but your character as well. While the story may become weird at times, it is nonetheless memorable. It’s honestly hard to describe the game without giving too much away, so do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. Trust me, you will be glad you did.
3. Horizon: Zero Dawn (PS4)
What makes a great game? How about a dystopian future, aggressive robot dinosaurs, and some primitive weapons? Turns out the answer is yes. All of these things and more await you in Horizon: Zero Dawn. As Aloy, a machine huntress, you explore the open world and work with various tribes to solve the mystery behind the machines. The game also features a rewarding combat system, forcing the player to think of different tactics to defeat their various opponents. Overall the game has received positive reviews, and is a must have for any PS4 owner.
2. Persona 5 (PS4)
An extremely popular game franchise both here in the US and Japan, Persona 5 released for PS4 on April 4, 2017. This series is considered one of the best JRPGs around. With an overwhelming positive score from critics and fans alike, this title would be a great addition for any RPG player. In this game, you play as high school student accompanied by a group of friends who embrace their inner personas, gaining new powers and becoming “phantom thieves”. The group uses their powers to help those in need and transform society. Ya, it’s kind of hard to explain, but trust me Persona 5 is definitely worth playing.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo Switch)
The latest entry into one of the oldest gaming franchises, Breath of the Wild does not disappoint. With hundreds of hours of gameplay, a compelling story, and superb mechanics, this is perhaps one of the best Zelda games to date. Released as a flagship game with the Nintendo Switch, it has become Nintendo’s best selling launch title, complementing the record breaking sales of the Switch. While I haven’t had the opportunity to play it myself, I am constantly surrounded by peers that talk about it day and night. Breath of the Wild will definitely be among the top contenders for game of the year, and so far I have no doubt it will claim that title.
Think I missed something? Feel free to comment below. And yes, there is a surprising lack of Xbox exclusives so far this year. Hopefully that changes. Thanks for reading!
